    Thicko question

I see all these help threads about firmware and channel dumps, what is this all about and what benefits are there to do these tasks...

Sorry if this is a daft question but I'm a technophobe

depends what box you have usually when you connect your box to a pc its to flash it with new or modified firmware or some other boxes like the dreambox can connect to the net for video streaming and card sharing, games etc i only have a basic eurovox blue so not to clued up about the new boxes so if you need to know more be as exact with questions as you can and the brains of dk will get back to you.

The default on its own will not decrypt premium tv. There are modified firmware available that will and to get that firmware onto your receiver, you need to connect it to your PC and flash the firmware to the box.

You then scan in the channels and you can view them. Some receivers allow you to categorise the channels, i.e. Movies, Sport, Entertainment, Music, etc. and you can save these in a channel dump or list. Uploading these dumps to your box saves you arranging them yourself.
