Eeeek Help an old man

Have downloaded the software thanks to the GREAT Satsmo. I have ex 1000 sl.
I have it pluged into a portable, as it has nothing to show apart from on/off.
I have a rs232 cable connecting box and computer.
The computer is not showing any new hardware attached.
What have I not done?
Is it the computer, or the rs232 lead?
Can anyone help?

if its a laptop you should have usb serial cable as well as the 232 null cable. but you may need the driver installing to make it work.
