    Thinking of getting an EX5100

    Hi all
Thinking of getting one of these to run in my bedroom
I'm a bit sceptic and aware of the consequences, My parents are not to keen but I always like a challenge
We have virgin media installed but failed on payments not being able to afford things and just well yeah you know, This is all new to me and everybody loves things for nothing!
I've read alot of things about them and looking forward to the challenge of setting one up, as this is wayyy out of my field of knowledge. My dad has one of them humax boxes and uses it to connect to satelittes like hotbird and stuff like that. i don't get it but there you go.
My question is... If i was to get one of these, Would i still be able to get everything if my services have been restricted? And some posts say to get a talkback cutter thing, that i looked on ebay for, would one of these be needed with one of these? as some boxes have them installed in them already (so i've read) I'd just like to be careful and do things right.
plus, My dad uses my laptop to program his box thing so that wouldn't be an issue
    Thanks for reading.

        Hello Marty,
First, you need to make sure that you will have a "LIVE" cable line.(BB or BB+TV) Not sure what you mean by services restricted but if you just subscribe to the basic package, this will ensure, you wont be cut off from the green junction box on the stree. if you get disconnected the box will be useless.

Once set up you will be able to receive over 200 channels, including S*Y movies and sports.

No need to worry about cutting talk back as these boxes dont have this feature.(talk back feature is on original cable company boxes)

You will also require the correct cable(s) for updating the softwa*e to the box, look here>http://www.digital-kaos.co.uk/forums...-eurovox-9786/
Have a read of the red "sticky" it explains in detail what you need and how to do it.

          I'd recomend a starview 4 super usb.

google " theboxdistributer" think they are going at ?69.99 with free delivery at the moment

has usb port so you are able to plug in an hdd drive for recording tv. usb is also a great feature because it easilly allows you to upgrade the firmware.

          I honestly couldnt fault it.

There are many cable recievers out there, just depends on your requirements and ofcourse budget.

check out dbvjunkieuk they have a wide range.

          Hope this helps

Basically Badapple fell behind on payments of like 4 months and just can't afford the monthly subscription atm... so they just keep adding the monthly bill onto the arrears... So therefore my services have been stopped... Just have the free channels on the boxes, I got the cables so that shouldn't be a problem

McGudge, i just wana be able to watch and record that's all my requirements are, dunno about the budget...
And how is usb easier? there some software for it ? or is it like the other ones, just connect a cable and press download?

            Thanks for your help :-)

Usb is easier becoz majority of hardware has usb.
where as eurovox's use rs 232(i believe, may be wrong.but thats wot ive gatherd) and many new laptops dont have that option available.

i just think usb is much easier becoz u can put anything onto ur usb pen drive. basically no need for wiring pc to reciever.

              Just my personal opinion.

anyway as i quoted ?70 for starview 4 (which can record by externally adding usb drive) seems to suit ur needs. ur choice

Hi Martyn, I was in your boots three months ago until I joined this forum. Now I have two EX5100's running. One in our bedroom and one down stairs. Running through a large plasma & LCD. You will get practically every channel that 'V' pump out. All sports & films going. Its ace' I'vr never heard of that talkcutter thing you were on about and have never needed anything other than the EX5100. It is pretty basic to download the firmwear and there is always advice on here. One point is not all computers recognise when you have connected to your EX5100. Here is a number for bubblesatellite who supplied mine at a competitive price ?105 + ?4.99 delivery and have been helpful all the way; 0844 8845410 goodluck!
