Hello, good morning. I am new to the forum and also to everything related to electronics. Right now, I am starting a small personal project. I have obtained an HP HSTNS-PL11 server power supply to modify it and achieve a stable 13.7v output, allowing me to connect it to a vehicle and perform programming operations. I followed a small YouTube tutorial (https://youtu.be/3zKvxx2WdX4?is=o8Q2cPeAGe65n-qW), in which you simply had to solder a couple of resistors internally in the power supply. My problem began when I started soldering the wire that comes from a pad of the OVP potentiometer. The issue is that I suspect the heat from the soldering iron caused the pad's adhesive to come off, and I ended up tearing off the pad. The potentiometer is also now unusable. Right now, I have the board without the potentiometer. I have soldered three wires to each pad of it, as well as the two resistors shown in the video. I understand that the potentiometer is 100 ohms, although measuring the old one gave me 120 ohms. I have tried soldering a 110-ohm potentiometer, connecting the potentiometer pads directly to each other, and desoldering the resistors indicated in the video, but now I can't even get the 12V that the power supply should have at the output. If anyone has any recommendations, it would be a great help.
Thank you

How to check scan tool compatibility before buying

Hello everyone,

I wanted to share a simple checklist that may help when choosing a diagnostic tool. Many people ask if one scanner supports a certain car, but in my experience the better question is whether the tool supports the exact vehicle, module, and function.

A brand list is not enough. One tool may read engine DTCs on a vehicle but still not support coding, adaptation, active tests, service reset, or module replacement on the same car.

Before buying or recommending a scan tool, I usually check these points:

1. Vehicle information
Make, model, year, engine, market region, and VIN if available.

2. Exact function needed
Reading codes, live data, active test, service reset, coding, adaptation, key programming, or ECU programming are different functions.

3. Module involved
Engine, ABS, airbag, BCM, transmission, immobilizer, gateway, etc. Coverage can be different by module.

4. Communication protocol
Newer vehicles may require CAN FD or DoIP support. If the VCI does not support the required protocol, the scanner may not communicate even if the brand is listed.

5. Security restrictions
Some FCA vehicles need SGW/AutoAuth access. Other brands may require online authorization for certain functions.

6. Software version and region
Coverage may depend on software version, update subscription, and region. A tool sold in one market may not have the same access or update policy in another.

7. Programming vs coding
J2534 pass-thru programming usually requires OEM software, a stable laptop, internet, and battery support. It is not the same as normal coding or adaptation.

In short, I think the safest way is to confirm the exact job before choosing the tool. If possible, ask with full vehicle details and the specific function needed, not only the car brand.

Hope this helps someone avoid buying the wrong tool.
