    happy 420

well the day is here again and the suns cracking the flags
today is 420 day which probably means nothing to alot of people but its a day were all us pot head get stoned
here and explanation from the daily mail
    Daily mail

    20th April 2011

You may catch a whiff of a fragrant green herb today.

That's because today is April 20, 4/20, making it a special day for marijuana smokers around the world, particularly in America.

Many will be lighting up to mark the occasion, sometimes even in public places like parks, and sometimes in fairly large groups.

Many feel they should get a free pass to smoke today, while others hope that they won't be bothered by police, believing they will find 'safety in numbers'.

In past years, there have been large gatherings of people smoking on 420, especially on the nation's college campuses and on San Francisco's Hippie Hill, in Golden Gate Park near the famous Haight-Ashbury district.

There are also significant gatherings in major Canadian cities and in New Zealand.

So what's the fuss about? The day is pronounced 'four twenty', and it is the most significant date for the still-thriving cannabis subculture, although many pot smokers do 'observe' the time 4:20 pm on the rest of the days of the year, for the same reason.

Although there has been some debate about the origin of the 420 phenomenon, most people tend to agree with the conclusion of 'High Times' magazine Creative Director Steven Hager, who wrote a story about the time and date in 1998.

According to Mr Hager, the term was coined by a group of teenagers in San Rafael, California in 1971. The teens allegedly called themselves the 'Waldos', because they hung out by a wall outside their school, San Rafael High School.

In 1971, the kids allegedly agreed to meet to look for an abandoned marijuana crop they had gotten wind of. They choose a Louis Pasteur statue on school grounds as the meeting place and 4:20 pm as the time.

Repeated failed attempt to find the crop had the teens coming back to the statue day after day, at the same time, which they allegedly began to refer to as 4:20.

Gradually, the term got shortened to 420 and spread through cannabis culture, both by word of mouth and by use in 'High Times' and other publications, as well as on TV.

Mr Hager wrote: 'I believe 420 is a ritualization of cannabis use that holds deep meaning for our subculture. It also points us in a direction for the responsible use of cannabis'.

Interestingly, 4:20 pm was also the time that Albert Hofmann took the first deliberate LSD trip, on April 19, 1943. Interesting but coincidence.

Wildly reported rumors of 420 referring to other marijuana lore are urban legends, according to snopes.com, such as the claims that it represents a penal code, police call sign, Grateful Dead preferred hotel room, number of compounds in pot or date of Jimi Hendrix's death.

Over the years, some groups have used 420 as a day to protest existing marijuana laws, or to advocate for legalizing it. Others just gather for the thrill of it, or to meet folks with a similar interest.

It will be interesting to see if 420 gets special treatment in Massachusetts, where marijuana was recently decriminalized. Specifically, it is no longer enough for police there to investigate someone if they think they smell the drug.

People will likely be smelling more of marijuana today, everywhere.
