    help needed to open a bank account

    hi guys i had some serious credit problems about 4 years ago and now im finding it hard to get a bank account due to my poor credit score. I have been searching about online and noticed some companies that guarantee a bank account but im not too sure about them as they are hardly household names. Basicly i just need an account that i can pay a little money into each month to pay for my car insurance so obviously the account would need direct debit facility. Any help or advice on this matter is appreciated.

    Go to the bank and explain what you are needing. There are some very basic accounts that banks will let you have.

        I had the same prob - The Co-op do a basic account that helps you build your credit rating back up.
        I have found them great.

          same trouble here dude, most banks operate a 'basic' account.
          i am with the nat west, and had no problems with them what so ever.
          in fact, after 3 years or so of being with them, they have just given me an overdraft facility.

          mick.

              yeh nationwide m8 get an account there no probs, i was in the same boat as you, i got one there no probs, as did some other people i know. you will obviously need proof of id and i think proof of address, utility bills in your name for the address you give them, but they dont do a credit check for the basic flex account, you will get an atm/debit card for this type account, this account is also good for direct debit, ideal for what you need it for.

                    you wont need to tell the bank anything like that... If you go to the Nat West and open a step account they will try to push you to a current account but just say "No thanks".. that's what i did..

                    I told them we didn't want an account with overdraft or cheque facilities.. just a basic account for our wages to go into..

                    i can do online banking and all the stuff normally associated with a current account.. You even get a Visa debit card, not a crappy Electron or Solo like some other banks with basic accounts

                    I've had the account for 8 years now.. they keep pushing me about upgrading to a current account with better interest and overdraft facilities etc, but i just keep telling them I'm not interested..

                    The reason my credit is so good now is because I haven't had the ability to go overdrawn in the past 8 years.. I even got myself a top up mastercard a few years back so now i have a full credit card for when compaines require payment by credit card only

                      if you are in scotland , then go to the airdrie savings bank snd open an account.
                      they don't check ~~~~ all and will let you open a basic account regardless...
                      all you need is I.D. and a quid to open the account....

                      failing that, the post office will allow you to open an account.

                      this will do exactly what you want, direct debits etc.....

                          ~~~~ me everyones had the same issues as myself
                          i went to nationwide and as peeps have said an account with no overdraft or cheque book or debit card is all they will give you + direct debit facility,,,dont ask for anything else,,i used this for quite a while and then after 2 years i applied at halifax for a current account and got that no probs + debit card + a ?100 overdraft which the ~~~~ers raised to ?2500 after 2 years without even asking me,sent me a letter a fortnight later
                          anyway depending on your circumstances another good way to build up your credit rating is to apply for a credit card from vanquis or similiar they specialise in poor credit ratings,,,the rates are extreme if you draw out cash on it or do not pay back in full every month,,, but if you set up a direct debit from your nationwide or whatever bank you will use to pay off the balance in full every month and just use the vanquis card this will increase your credit rating,it takes time,,,also if you have any unpaid ccjs then this a major problem in the future as i have just found out when trying to open up a business account
                          also its worth paying one time to take a look and see what the various credit agencys have on file about you as some of it is outdated and you can get it removed like i have done
                            By the way, having an overdraft does not affect your credit ratimg, but they will check your rating to offer you one
