Council asking over ?29.00 for a new bin

My bin got lost so I telephoned our Council and they told me from 2011 we charge ?29.00 + Delivery charge for new bin.

Who?s responsible is it to look after the bins when they are left outside to be emptied and will I get any help if I report the matter to the police???..?

How can any one effort to pay over ?29.00 if your bins are stolen every week?

Any clue to what I shall do to get the bins free?

Buy a new one and paint the shit out of it with your address... It will always been seen if stolen by a neighbor.

Any clue to what I shall do to get the bins free?

i am a wagon driver for our local council and because of the govt squeezing us all most council have been forced to bring in this levy.
our council can replace up to two hundred bins a week that disappear.
              to answer your questions tho

it is unfortunately the householders responsibility to ensure the safe storage of his bin after collection.

but there is a possible way around the charge for a new bin, maybe your bin has not gone walkabout but has in fact slipped into the back of the vehicle and been crushed,if this is the case your binmen shud have reported it to their supervisors.fortunately this does mean you automatically get a bin allocated free of charge,so next week speak to your bin men and see if they remember this happening or are prepared to state that is what happened and a new bin will wing its way to you.

Looks like we have to knick each others bin till one of us gets nicked.

I will not be paying a penny when already paying enough with my council tax?????

We have a wheelie bin in our woods. You can have it!! Yes its unfortunate when your bin goes awal. It may turn up at the next collection. One of our neighbours is a. Bit senile and they took ours once but we tracked it down, brought it home and Fed.

Simple if its your recycle bin just tell the council you will put your recycle stuff in normal black bin. It'll cost them more to dump the stuff in it than 29 quid.

just go round and steal your local councillors bin then whn he gets charged for a new one
he can put it on his expenses
we (the tax payer) can all pay for a new bin for him
Today is the Tomorrow you worried about yesterday ......Was it worth it ?

Once had my wheelie bin stolen... long time ago. It was replaced free of charge. In light of your post I wonder what my own local council's policy is now.

It does appear that Councils up and down the country are introducing charges for services etc...some of which, I've heard are not legally enforceable.

In your position, I'd be thinking of writing a strongly worded letter to the Council leadership, Councillors and of course Members of Parliament and local press.... but then......... I'm crazy!

Considered legal questions come to mind..........

Where you the legal owner of said wheelie bin? (In my case.... I'm not)

Did you enter into any legal agreement to accept losses or liabilty for said wheelie bin? (In my case, I have not)

Did you receive notification from the council, that in order for said wheelie bin to be emptied, it was required to be placed on the public road (In my case, I have)

Would it be possible for me to insure property for which I am not the owner, that is placed on the public street? (In my case, I think not... but haven't entered into any liability agreement for said wheelie bin)

Given the council has required wheelie bins to be placed on the public street to be emptied, have the Council failed in their duty of care to maintain security of said wheelie bin through policing?

The Council is proposing a charge of ?29
Is the charge of ?29 selling you the wheelie bin, from which you will then be the legal owner?

From where is the delivery charge? (As I am a local resident should I have the option to collect?)

The charge of ?29 needs to be distinguished from between a sale of goods or a charge for compensation. In the case of compensation, are you liable?

If it happened to me... I'd say the Council has lost their wheelie bin, of which they are the legal owner.. on grounds that they own, maintained by public funds... while the Council failed in their duty of care towards the security of said wheelie bin.
