    Telescopes

Saw a telescope in tesco today reduced from 50 quid to 25 quid. I dont know much about them but this thing had 250 times magnification. Is this good for a telescope and would i be able to see mars and saturn with it.

I had a 7" Newtonian reflector that I think was 500x magnification. Even with the best 'reasonably priced' telescopes Mars will be nothing more than a red dot. It is possible to see the rings of Saturn however. Good luck finding them!

It also depends on where you live, I bought a 262x reflector a few years back, I've still got it somewhere, but I live in a city and the light pollution makes it pretty difficult to see much, I did get a good view of the moon, but that's about all.

Thanks guys i think i will give that tesco one a go for 25 bucks and start with the moon see how it goes. Theres some great apps on the iphone for stargazing so i will be checking those out too. Incidently i noticed that when you look at telescopes especially expensive ones they never tell you the magnification. I would have thought that would be the most important thing.
