    Website case extradition ruling due

    Website case extradition ruling due

A Sheffield Hallam University student will learn whether he is to be extradited to the US to stand trial over alleged infringement of copyright.
Richard O'Dwyer, 23, is accused of operating a website that offered free downloading and streaming of thousands of copyright films and television programmes without permission from copyright holders.

The undergraduate earned money through hosting advertisements on the TVShack website, allegedly receiving more than 230,000 US dollars (around ?147,000) in advertising revenue since January 2008, according to the US authorities.

His lawyer, Ben Cooper, argued that the site did not store any copyright material but merely pointed users to other sites where they could download films and TV shows.

He said the website linked to other sites in the same way as Google and Yahoo operate, and people were not able to view a film from TVShack directly.

Mr Cooper added that his client would be the first British citizen to be extradited for such an offence and he would effectively become a "guinea pig" for copyright law in the US.

John Jones, for the US authorities, said the victims of the alleged offences included the film studios. He said the website highlighted the savings that could be made in cinema tickets in the US.

The decision on whether to extradite Mr O'Dwyer to stand trial on charges of copyright infringement and conspiracy to infringe a copyright will be made when the case is heard at Westminster Magistrates' Court at 2pm.

OP Comment: Remember the treaty between the US & The UK was brought in specifically to deal wtih terrorism yet within months of the treaty being signed the US successfully extradited white collar criminals.
Now get this, the only news platform to cover this huge story today is the lads local rag, what does that say about the British press?

    Well he's lost

UK student faces U.S. extradition in copyright case

UK student faces U.S. extradition in copyright case - chicagotribune.com

    Now going to appeal.

I remember seeing this on tv. A copyright lawyer was on there and said the only reason that the US wanted him to be extradited to the US was because he wouldn't be convicted under British law.
He didn't break the laws of the country he is resident and has citizenship in. He's been charged with 'conspiracy' to commit copyright infringement

Absolute shocker this.....!! I would march on the Houses of Parliament for this...

He has not broken any laws in this country and there is no way he should ever be extradited!!!

I am thinking of setting up an e-petition so this gets spoken about in parliament to hear what the MP's have to say... It would need 100,000 to sign up... Would it be achieved?
