Why does that story not surprise me one bit.
There's very little a person can do these days without some bugger lookin over your shoulder.
I refuse to answer that question on the grounds that I do not know the answer.

I suppose that is the only way a bugger can look.

          anyone heard of Phorm?

In a nutshell (without going into too much technical detail) it's a company thats beeing installing "Deep Packet Inspectors" or DPI equipment on BT internet lines.

These units scan everything that goes into and out of your line and searches for keywords, creating a profile on you to deliver e
          you more targeted advertising.

Essentialy they behave like a man at your letterbox who opens every letter you get to see what adverts your likely to respond more to.

The really cool thing about DPI gear is that they can manipulate your connection in real time, reporting EVERYTHING your looking at to another user and giving that user control to modify it if they wanted, it would be fairly simple to alter text on a page to say whatever you want it to and the average end user would be none the wiser.

The really awesome part is that when it really takes off, ISP's are going to be all over it, with virgin and sky watching by the sidelines to see wtf is going on in terms of legality and public outcry. should it pass through on BT's service then everyone will jump on the bandwaggon for a piece of the profits.

They have been doping this for a long time. Large companies are also surfing the net for 'high profile' words that would affect them. Just the same way as you type in ~~~~ when you are looking for Formula One.

Aye, arent VM gonna trial it soon. They say you'll be able to opt out of it, but if they make it compulsory then I for one won't be using VM.

The difference here forntida is that theyre installing hardware to watch your line.
Like tapping your phonecalls and listening to everything your saying down the line.
Then being able to impersonate the other caller and tell you only what they want you to hear.

deep packet inspectors have a severe dark side, for instance if the data is being sent somewhere (to a serverfarm in russia currently) then it could be possable for me to make a few small changes to the software that runs them to allow me to do all kinds of scary stuff.
take the following as an example:

You log on to your bank account and its encrypted, in theory you could crack the encryption but that takes a lot of time and effort on my part and for what? a few grand at most from someones account? hardly worth it.

I could however build a server that looks genuine to the unsuspecting banking customer and have it log all account details without much effort.

This is where the inspection equipment comes in, it can be set up to forward people from one address to another so instead of www.myrealbank.com it forwards to www.chromas-master-plan.com without you even knowing about it.

You log into my bank and it steals your details and forwards you into your real account so your really none the wiser about whats really happening.

after a few months i figure i would have a stack of accounts to harvest, whilst im waiting for all the details to come in im also opening up accounts all around the world, by the time i hit my 3 month mark i should have several millions of accounts opened up with nothing in them and no real way of tracing them.

i just write a script now that transfers all the money in all the accounts ive stolen to to all the new accounts.

Then my script will swap money around these accounts filtering it all down after a few million transfers to a single account.
This will take the authorities months to trundle through to figure out where the money went. (and it will only take my computer a couple of days at most to complete several billion transactions)
By the time the authorities have found the last account i will have been there a decade earlier and withdrew all the money and been snorting cocaine from hookers asses at exotic places throughout the world for years.

A few months work from a couple of computers and ive litteraly got most of the UK's money in my back pocket, by the time it gets traced back to me, ive already became an entirely new person (fairly simple with more money than i could burn through in a lifetime with an industrial furnace and a big shovel)

Survailance is one thing, the ability to manipulate data in realtime without the end users permission or knowledge is another.

If they put their deep hardware into my laptop they will get nothing in return.

We will just have to return to putting a signature to everything.
