Motorway > Bypass.. Dedicated lorry lane..

I consider myself to be a good driver, though I guess most people would. I understand the highway code, I understand that lane 1 is for travelling in. Lane 2 is for overtaking vehicles in Lane 1, Lane 3 is for overtaking vehicles in Lane 2. Right?

So why is it that a good 80% of the drivers on the road do not understand this principle? I am constantly forced to either undertake a 'Middle lane hog' or I have to dangerously cut from Lane 1 into Lane 3 and then back again. The former being the illegal scenario, the latter being the dangerous (yet not illegal) scenario. I do not hold this grudge against the individual, as I am almost at the point where I am also going to start sitting in the middle lane. Why should I risk my well-being by performing dangerous manoeuvres when I can simply sit in the middle lane and not be punished for my shoddy driving?

The government spends millions widening our roads, adding active traffic management systems (though not fixing pot-holes!) etc yet these 'middle lane hoggers' are effectively turning a 3 lane Motorway into a dual carriageway with an exclusive Lorry lane. Instead of pumping more and more money into improving the roads, why not crack down on poor drivers whom do not understand how lanes work? Instead of years of 50mph 'Average speed checks', endless amounts of frustrated drivers and not to mention the millions of pounds that are spent on these operations, why not start to fine middle-lane hogs? It would be money in your pocket and the roads would be a better place for all, not to mention much safer. Leave speeders alone and tackle the real problem on our roads.

I agree kalipo. I do a lot of driving in a van which we all know has reduced rear visibility and moving into Lane 3 where the traffic is generally travelling between 80 and 90mph to overtake someone sitting in the middle Lane at 60 is bollox. In my opinion middle lane hoggers are driving without due care and attention as they are not sufficiently aware of the highway code or paying enough attention or consideration to other road users and should be dealt with severely. I will bet these are also the same people who don't react quickly enough to emergency vehicles or just simply panic when approached by blues and twos....... as you will have guessed I loath these people and the carnage they inevitably cause. The people who have never been in an accident because other drivers reactions prevent it.

I once, a few year back was travelling home.. approaching a roundabout i had a car infront of me.. we both took the first exit to the motorway and proceeded down the slip road at what i saw as dangerously slow speeds because trucks in the inside lane are doing 56mph.. this person was doing 30.. No faster than 40mph..

As soon as she got onto the motorway she instantly and no word of a lie.. she instantly went straight to the middle lane.. no use of lane 1 whatsoever..

I then to get past her undertook her..

What made me laugh not at the time.. but later on was the fact the cheeky bitch kept flashing me because id undertook her..

I wanted to get out a kicked 10 colours out of her..

None of this shoudn't hit women.. she endangered a few lives doing what she did..

I could not agree more but at the end of the day there is no excuse for speeding on any road or breaking the law of undertaking etc... as many would know and has always been solid advice throughout the years when planning any journey always plan with plenty of time to complete your journey safely and without the need to break any traffic laws.

Would just like to point out today i spent two hours off line in this kak city getting from obe end to the other. Normally takes 20 mins max

On the return jouney i went down the back road to be stuck behind a peasant doing 30 mph in a red shasho (gmb?)

When carried on straight, i hung a right up to a village have never speeded there was going slightly fastrr than should and the fuzz was there with hairdryer!

Not sure if you an invite or not!

I also went to birmingham motorway signs said 50 did 50 felt unsafe with cars up my arse so was forced to 70!

                Not strictly true.

If you are travelling in the inside lane at a constant speed, within the speed limit, and you happen to pass a vehicle in the middle lane, you are not technically undertaking. It happens all the time in slow moving heavy traffic.

You would only be prosecuted if you change lanes to pass on the inside or are accelerating to pass.

I agree but it irritates me only for a minute or two i soon forget

I would ban all speeding whatsoever on motorway, go as fast as you can for me

In fact i would ban speeding full stop

go as fast as YOU think ok

i always have traffic permitting and never had a fine either

People who go under speed limit like 30 in a 40 really get on my wires tho

LOL not true mate i do on the odd occasion get a little mythed so to speak, But after a long many years of driving i found that just allowing myself that bit of extra time to get where i am going leaves me in a better state of mind. I did suffer the white van man syndrome when i used to subby all over the UK and be on Timed jobs so yes i did want to Finnish early but i always got wound up in the process because of what everyone is experiencing now with certain drivers. So now i just chill and get on with it

Wholeheartedly agree with the first post here. My thoughts exactly.
They should have a series of adverts on BBC 'educating' these middle laners. Along with a deadline for prosecutions to start. Then get the police to start a month long campaign of fixed penalties.
Maybe then word of mouth might drum into these tossers how to drive properly.

My sentiments exactly digicon. Better late than never but trundling along the motorway slower than an artic is an accident waiting to happen. Whether it be involving the hogger or caused by them. I don't generally do Road rage or stress for that matter (anymore laid back and I'd be horizontal) but these ****ers are a liability. My mother in law is one of them. She reckons she is not confident enough to change lanes so sits in the middle to which my reply is. Well stay the **** of the motorway if you don't think you have adequate driving skills to be on it.

When we are learners, we must stay clear of motorways.
When we pass our tests.. There ya go, get yourself on that motorway...No idea, only maybe the theoretical side of motorway practice..
Where else in the world would that happen??? .. don't answer that.. probably loads actually, apart from Germany.
In Germany it is compulsory to take Autobahn lessons after passing your test, and everyone sits in the correct lane, otherwise a 200mph Porsche would be up your arse.
A lot of Germany's autobahns are unlimited speed AND two lane.. yet they still cope. We have 4 lane sections and still its crap.

There is a charge available of inconsiderate driving, but it is hard to prove.
