    What's happened to manners

I attended my local hospital today in Glasgow and upon arrival was steered into a waiting room with about 15 seats in it. All the seats were taken except one, which I took. There were about 5 seats taken by kids ages 10-16, the rest adults like myself.
In comes an old lady with a walking stick about 80 years old and yes you guessed it, nobody batted an eyelid and she had to stand there. I stood up and offered the old lady my seat. Where are people's manners nowadays?
I was brought up to show manners towards the elderly and give up a seat on a bus or waiting room or hold open a door. Assist an elderly person where required. The younger generation are so ignorant.

what I was taught as manners a long time ago could now be seen as sexist .
Like opening a door to a women , saying after you,can I give you a lift with that etc
I once saw a girl give a right rollicking to this gent for opening a door for her but I thought he got the better of her when he said
sorry I was brought up with manners pity you weren't

I always get up for old ladies, hold doors open and say please and thanks

          manners cost nothing

too many kids these days are just spoilt and lazy, they know no hardship everything is given on a plate. Respect seems to have vanished

I was going to do a similar thread about it one day after watching that Mr Selfridge

Its amazing how much society has changed in a few years.

I wonder what the ladies of the 20's and 30's would think of the modern lady pissed on the floor covered in their own sick

Emily Pankhurst would be proud to see where her achievements led im sure

yes all so true these days sadly no shame at all, something i don't like on TV these programmes, showing these chavs giving them a platform to go on tv acting like that, and these ones in police station spitting at the offices when getting booked in, then they go back to the estates thinking i am Mr big did you see me on tv spitting at police and so on.

                manners maketh the man

oh john manners were lost by most people a long time ago.

when my stepdaughter was here for christmas i got her to write thank you cards for my family and friends that had got her a present. she said she had never done that before!!

Like many others, I open doors for people..or make sure nobody is following me before I let the door close. Please & thank you are always used. I also try to find every more embarrassing ways of thanking people, my favorites being referring to people as Dear & Darling.

I personally think the slow degeneration of peoples manners started with the standard fitting of central locking on cars.
Prior to this I always unlocked & opened my female passengers door first. Now it's just 'click' & everyone for themselves.

I see it in the shop. Older people tend to close the door when they leave, younger people never close it. Ok, not all young people, but you can tell at a glance those that won't.

Check you out with your posh car with central locking fob, i'm still using the old fashion method

Agree its the parents fault, my kids would be told to stand for someone more elderly or more needy etc. (too young at the moment to know any better). Manners have to be passed down otherwise its monkey see monkey do.
