    Pandora's box has been opened

New Zealand passes law banning software patents | ITProPortal.com

The only laws are the laws of nature, everything else is an opinion

Since it only affects patents for 'inventions' in New Zealand it will have very little if any impact. It's probably quite sensible to do away with them if they've had very few applied for since it probably costs more to administer and police than it's worth.

'cos plain old Zealand still exists and is alive and kicking off the coast of Denmark, or even part of The Netherlands. Having more than one place with that name would make it very confusing for air/sea rescue if you got washed up on the beach. "Help my boat has sunk off Zealand...." the reply would come back "Are they speaking Danish, Dutch or attempting to speak English?" or "Are there more sheep than people, and are there any mountains?" - you see the problem? *shrug* Also think of the poor Americans, most of them don't even know that there is actually more to the world than America, where would they bomb given all 3 choices - since Dave wouldn't be able to send them a map either.

I also wonder what Pandora thinks of her box being open to the world as well....

I can plague Microsoft windows, call it Doors and legally sell it in NZ?
If i purchase software from NZ which is deamed illegal in other countries and then use it in a country that's considered illegal, i have broken the law?
Does that mean that the term "Software Piracy" no longer exists in NZ since it will be a free for all for people to make and sell copies of the original(s)?
Price of software will be significantly reduced in NZ and that won't affect the market in other countries?

These are just questions off the top of my head since it will have very little if any impact

No, you can't do any of that. It doesn't affect patents filed outside of New Zealand which would still be in place, nor is it retrospective on software previously developed in NZ.

Windows isn't written in New Zealand.
Just because you buy something in one country where it's legal doesn't mean it's ever legal to use elsewhere. Try buying drugs in Holland and bringing them back to the UK as an example.

It just takes common sense to work it out. Can you name a piece of software developed in New Zealand?

why? just because it says it on the bottom of the article?

Software is not drugs, the fact that it applies to software is a joke regardless if it only applies to NZ thats the point i was making not that i'm not aware that it does not apply

There lies the contradiction, then why bother with the law if that's the case?

I suggest you look up Gary Kilner, no amount of laws protected him
