Is there much point in getting a projector?

I have always wanted to get one but on the one hand I just see it as a means to satisfy my addiction to technology but it would be good to watch stuff like Stanley Cup, Six Nations and Winter Olympics on it.

Does anyone have one and what are your opinions on them?

Use them at work and as cactikid states bulbs have so many hours of life andsome have dust filters which need cleaning from time to time.
They have to be positioned 8 to 10 feet from screen/wall to get a good size picture.
Yes, the bulbs are expensive, some up to 200 euro what ever that may be in Sterling. (I'm assuming you are in Great Britain)

Some now use high power lasers instead of bulbs. No idea which ones. But the M140 Blue laser that's very popular with self build burning projects comes from a projector

Today's projector will last 2 year if used 8hrs a day. Then they look like a 35yrs old crt: washed out picture and low brighteness due to lamp aging and pcb aging.
Any brand behave exactly like this.
And if your room temperature is below 15C, a few months old projector could takes 30 minutes to have picture.
So you have to offer him a warm tea to help it waking up. Just not spilling the tea all over.

hello,i have an acer 3d projector, first one i have ever owned, bought it for around 600 euros and its brilliant.
only use it for films, and the kids use it for their ps3.had it 2 years now and the picture is still the same as day 1.
can be mounted on a table or fixed to the ceiling.well impressed.
