The Freezer

Why is it that when i open my freezer to take something out, the door won't close properly again? This happens quite a lot!

Now you would think that because you have taken something out the door should close more easily, but it just never seems to work this way! Any ideas on it anyone?

My guess.. is that i have found 8 times out of 10 its the magnet strip along the seal of the door that just gives up, from everyday wear & tare.

or ice build up that means 1 of the drawers doesn't go in all the way, hence blocking the door. i defrosted mine for the first time in about 5 years - what a difference! wrap all the food in a duvet ( to keep it frozen) then unbplug the freezer and stick it in the garden - i also put a bowl of hot water in to loosen the ice.

Yeah i defrost it regularly, i know it definitely needs another one

next time you defrost, when its empty of ice, turn back on, leave empty of food for ten mins then make up a heavy sugar to (boiling) water mixture and spray the mixture into your freezer with something like a plant spray bottle, covering all surfaces.. once frozen dry put your food back in

the build up of ice takes a lot longer to come back

When I was very young I remember my mother asking my dad to defrost the freezer, she caught him using a blow torch to do the job, probably would have worked ok but she was not impressed!!

i use the mrs's hair dryer and a pallet knife

I usually put a basin of boiling water in, and use a knife, i have resorted to the hairdryer before though

When the food in your freezer freezes it causes a contraction in the air pressure within your freezer thereby 'sucking' on your door. When you open your door you release this suction and the air pressure becomes normal again. When you close the door you are increasing the pressure within the freezer. If the freezer air vents are 'clogged' then the door will be pushed open again. More so if you leave it open too long and moisture gathers on the seal.

my freezer is frost free but when i did have one that got frost on it i used a steamer to defrost it, done the job nicely

You could also get a loan of Lainies hair dryer.

My mom uses a seam cleaner to quickly defreeze the her freezer when its too iced up.
You coulf also try to adjust the hinges on the doors of if it is a built in appliance check that the outer panel doors are secured tothe freezer correctly and nor preventing it from closing
