its nothing to do with being tight mate. this type of thing really pi$$es me off. it's as simple as this. the big department stores and supermarket change would refuse you the goods for being a penny short. so why should you let them have an extra penny at your cost.

your right nailler everytime I go into a petrol stn and put in say five or ten pounds worth of fuel I allways go over by a penny,
but do they let you off with it do they hell even if you havent got a penny they will give you change.and that pi**es me of.
I am convinced those petrol pumps are fixed to go over a penny.

ha ha so funny mate. for a luagh one day me and a mate decided to put ?19.95 into the van, gave the cashier 30 and got a tenner note back. gets better. my mate went off on one over the 5p. ~~~~in class. she nearly cried
But for me it depends which shop I am at.... If its my local shop which I know would let me off with 20p if I never had it, I let them have it... But if its another shop that I know of when I was in the queue they knocked back a woman buying some stuff coz she was 5p short I would not let them off with a single penny, I wait every time for my change...Be it 1p or 2p, I make sure they give it to me.
?0.016440394704 by current market values for a 1p before 1992 (post 1992 is merely copper plated steel)
The reason for the change over should be readily apparent, if a penny is worth 1.6p whats to stop anyone buying up say a hundred quids worth and melting them down (or ground up into powder to get rid of the queens image) to sell the copper for ?164.40
I cant get the exact dimensions for a modern 1p so i cant figure out the copper to steel ratio but i can guess that its value will be well under a penny
