Nor in mine, copper is so weakly magnetic that it is generally treated as being non-magnetic.

Modern 'copper' coins can easily be sorted magnetically though. The 2p coin for example is 93% mild steel and 7% copper. Before 1992 it was made from bronze, which is non-magnetic.

They changed the alloys a while back 1992? cause the weight of a penny was worth more in its melted down state than its printed value.

So spending ?100 on pennies / 2p's would net you more money if you melted em down and sold the alloy

Sounds to me like you've got yourself a stripped 20p 20s are electroplated with nickel certain solutions can strip this down to the base alloy and leave it like a shiny new coin (albeit the wrong color)

Just managed to get the 20p from my m8, I've taken a couple of photo's but not very good quality. After looking at it again it looks like it may be 20p info stamped onto a 1p blank if that makes sense? the angles on the outside are not as prominent and its nearly round, its the same size but is lighter

Looks like someone's been playing with their Fisherprice 'learn about money' coin die.

which means they are copper in colour, not "COPPER". COPPER coins could not be magnetic! actually they are made of steel. oddly they were never made of copper. bronze was the metal, originally, use.

I think the change happened about 15 years ago.

And also, our coinage (before decimalisation) was pound, shilling and pence (denoted as L, S, D), which in turn stood for Librae, Solidi and Denarii.
This was down to the fact that e used to use the Roman system of currency, who in turn ruled Europe and established a common currency.
So our coinage is based on a Common European Currency, but we see the Euro as a bad idea...weird huh?
                    Aint money interesting?
