The sign is not a throwback to the days of segregation as many believe at first glance, but rather an effort to discourage rival motorbike gangs from flashing their colours and brawling. The word "bikers" does appear on the sign in very small letters.
"There are some black people who are regulars here. There's no racial problem around here. But there's sometimes a biker problem," said Bob Reed, a regular at the bar.
