4.01 jailbreak

Picking up iPhone 4 this morning, running on 4.01
I've only jailbreaked one on 5.01, do I use the same method or other type or do I have to upgrade to 5.01 first

Unless your new iPhone has it's SHSH blobs saved for 5.0.1 firmware you cannot Restore to 5.0.1....you can only restore to 5.1 firmware and jailbreak(Tethered)

Thanks, what would the best way to jailbreak 4.01 be

A lot of the best Cydia tweaks won't work on 4.0.1 firmware...or AppStore apps for that matter...

I would update to 5.1.....the tethered jailbreak is easy to live with. You can use iFaith to save your current SHSH blob....so if you don't like 5.1 you can go back to 4.0.1 firmware...
