What is best AVI Codec

My brand new Samsung LCD TV will play only about 20 out of almost 100 AVI films I have on PC, displaying something about "Cannot read CODEC" on the others... Is there a way to change this CODEC on my AVI files so that they are recognized ? Is there anything like a "most common" CODEC ?

Yesterday, I downloaded a program named GSpot, which analysed one of the "good" AVI films (which my TV will display correctly) and showed it is a "H-264 MPEG-4" type AVI. I then analysed one of the "bad" files, which is a "WMP v7" type AVI.
Finally I used "ASEE Soft DVD Video to H-264" to convert the bad file, which was reduced from 1.4Gb to only 400Mb, but it still didnot work out.

I would greatly appreciate any help on this issue !

It is unlikely you will be able to get a codec installed on your tv. You are saying the films are on your pc...Would I be correct in thinking that you are streaming them from pc to tv if so then use ps3mediaserver from here put your shared movie folder into the server then run server and select server from tv and watch film

your tv will only play what formats of video it allows, either get a multi media player like the wdtv or if your streaming them from your computer to your tv try the home media server serviio, theres a link in my sig its brilliant it also allows for the playing of rtmp video streams also rss
streams, check it out is ace and free, it also pisses all over ps3 media server

Pmsl at you gmb serviio is good and much prettier and quicker loading thumbs than ps3 media server but don't you remember the problems I had with it. Namely it does not bypass cinevea protection which is being embedded into more and more audio tracks (especially blue ray) and has now been implemented by a lot more manufacturers than just sony, samsung have it in there smart blue ray players and tv's. So yes in some respects serviio is better but I wouldn't go as far as saying it pisses on ps3, unless they have solved the cinevea issue that is

I must confess I dont know what is "streaming"; Sorry for my forgetting to clarify I am using a Kingston G2 Datatraveller Pendrive in which I copy the AVI files from my notebook and stick it to the TV set... (I also have same problem with a Philips PFL40 5000LED Series, manufactured in Singapore in 2011)

I understand I cannot change or install any CODEC on the TV, so I am trying to figure out whether there is a way to convert or "re-record" AVI files using a CODEC that would be recognized in most up-to-date TV sets... my TV manual states it can read "most AVI files", and does not mention anything about CODECS...

I also forgot to mention I cannot consider uploading to external servers as I am using a dialed internet connection in a farm... (extremely slow connection, only good for reading text) and my media player does not support USB, so recording almost a hundred DVDs is out of question... ;-)

There are lots of convertors out there mate. You will find the biggest problem you will be having is not with the avi video but with the ac3 audio. AVS video converter will work for you, just make sure the settings you choose are xvid or divx for video and mp3 for audio, you won't get true surround sound but your tv will play the films.

never had any probs at all with this cinevea shite and ive downloaded tbs worth of videos, gastonj has also so got serviio working good as well so ner. there are other cheaper media players you can buy rather than the wdtv, like bout 20-30? solve your problems with videos that wont play. download your film stick onto usb drive stick into media palyer and away you go no problem. i had same problem with my sony internet tv, some it would play some it wouldnt, so i thought ~~~~ this and brought a wdtv live, no problems ever since with videos that wont play. video convertors are all well and good but they take time to convert a video and you will loose some of tha quality of the video after its been converted. buy a media player m8 plug it into your tv via hdmi stick your drive into it and away you go, no ~~~~ing about with converting, thats sooooooooooooo yesterday

I agree with you on no more converting gmb, it's old hat and only do it now to post films up to my sister on dvd. I would prefer to stick them on dropbox to share with her but small villages in scotland still have betamax videos on the book case. Trying to drag them into this century is hard work, gonna have a good bash at showing them the real world when I go visit in a few weeks

Have you dug deep into Serviio? I had problems with my Panasonic Viera when I first ran it against Serviio, but a bit of digging around on their site and I came up with the correct profile. Serviio is capable of transcoding in real time, which means you don't convert the files to play on any device, Serviio does it for you in the background and you leave your files as is.

Cheers gaston, I did have a good dig around but couldn't find a profile and everybody on the forum was keeping tight lipped, ps3 recodes on the fly as well so it's not to much hassle

I will have to try and explain downloading m8 that's the problem, honestly it's like the ~~~~in dark ages up there. They only noticed facebook a year or so ago. ~~~~ me half them don't have ebay accounts and paypal, well, they think that's when you give money to your friend for doing some work for you
