I'd have to recommended distrowatch too, its great for finding new and old buried distributions.

Be sure to try out DSL (Damn Small Linux) and Puppy Linux as well, it's quite old but is a very small distribution (albeit, not useful for desktop/ongoing use)

go for ubuntu 10.4 desktop it will work perfect with gui on the desktop version its a bit easier to change settings, if you going for c/s get an omniikey reader rgds..

I like ubuntu for it's 'just works' factor......
however you don't learn as much when it 'just works'.
Even ubuntu didn't just work like it does now only a few years ago and I think I learnt a lot from the days when most things had to be done in command line.
I can't vouch for other distros really as don't use on day to day basis.
