      go for ubuntu 10.4 desktop it will work perfect with gui on the desktop version its a bit easier to change settings, if you going for c/s get an omniikey reader rgds..

        I like ubuntu for it's 'just works' factor......
        however you don't learn as much when it 'just works'.
        Even ubuntu didn't just work like it does now only a few years ago and I think I learnt a lot from the days when most things had to be done in command line.
        I can't vouch for other distros really as don't use on day to day basis.

        edit: must add the ubuntu forums are brilliant for help so if something doesn't work go there,
