It looks similar to many units out there, but 500mW isn't that powerful.

    1000mW wi-fi usb dongle

There are 2000mW units, but they have had issues with drivers.

The RTL8187L chipset is supported by BT4 & is the most common set for monitor mode use.

Been playing with the idea of picking up a new antenna since my 12dbi gain directional antenna decided to break.
Been looking that this... 36dbi gain antenna

36dbi gain antenna + 1000mW dongle = serious workable range.

Curent setup... 1000mW dongle & 17dbi gain antenna.

Router is about 25 meters away, 2 breezeblock walls, metal shelving & mountains of stock between the two.

Samsung galaxy S2 has 1-2 bars

Netbook showing full signal. Signal strength 90%, Quality 92%

The dongle isn't an exact match to mine, but it's basically the same except for the logo.

Mine did come from china, got a bargain as the first was seriously delayed in the post. Ended up with 2 for the price of one

I've not ordered the 36dbi antenna yet as need my money for other toys first.

Don't think you'll get a high power dongle in the UK for anything near the price of the one listed.

These things are worth every penny, even if it does take over a week to arrive.

Don't think I'd spend that much on an antenna. You won't get anywhere near 5km from it. But it would be interesting to see how well it does work.

I have a 19dbi gain antenna. Just a standard plastic antenna about 40cm in length. Cost me about ?7 from china & works like a charm. But that's on my PC, the netbook has a slightly smaller 12dbi gain antenna. Both give excellent connections.

Taking you downloaded the ISO file, you need to burn it to CD.

Put the finished disk in your drive & restart the PC.

Make sure your boot sequence has the CD/DVD drive listed before your hard drive. Enter bios to do this.

Once loaded you will probably need to log in.
                User : root
                Password : toor

At the prompt you need to type 'startx' (without the quotations) & hit enter

Think I still have a guide to cracking wi-fi on google docs, I'll have to check though....

                Ooops, I deleted it.

                ~~~~ me they don't make that easy, uploaded again & will PM you the link.
