vista pc cannot access virgin internet

hi guys a mate cannot access internet on his vista pc its hard wired to a router then to the modem the icon at the bottom right shows its connected but its not. tried powering the router and modem off and on.

tried pluggin the pc straight into the modem but still the same i then checked the ip address and it started with 169 so gave it a static ip and it still wouldnt connect even tried accessing the wireless through my phone and that wouldnt access it either.

    any ideas?

        Wipe it & start again.

Had a nasty in my mams pc. Ping test ok, but wouldn't connect to the internet via any browser, Avast refused to update & Malwarebytes was unable to scan memory & registry.

Didn't have the time to hunt down the little ~~~~er, so it was format & install.

This time they might actually listen to the popups from malwarebytes & Avast & stop letting things in.

Guess this person isn't a good friend then . Making them suffer with Vista instead of upgrading to 7.

I'd do that to my family, but they're to thick to notice any difference.

you know the connection is good if not check the connection from the router to the laptop / PC then the connection from the router to the modem.

some viruses will change the proxt settings

In I.E. go to tools internet options and conections (tab) click LAN settings , so long as he does not connect through a proxy make make sure there are NO ticks on this page.
