    Long distance wireless antenna

I was wondering if it is possible to purchase an antenna that would pick up a wifi signal from a couple of km away, so if there was a neighbour who had a wifi signal that I could pick it up from a few km away?

Remember that for best results and good working network You should 2 Antennas on both sides of link.
      for tx/rx in both sides.
So if antenna on AP i good, ap signal is strong, there is no problem to build connection on few km.
      What distance you are interested?

Well what I was hoping was to pick up domestic signals from about a km away, but now from what I can work out is that it would only work if the wifi signal was boosted stronger than a simple domestic wifi from a wireless router?

        Is this correct?

OK I want to pick up home wireless wifi signals from neighbours from up to 1km away.

For this to happen the home wireless network would need to be boosted?

            Is this correct?

              Yes!
But You can do it in different-better way.
              Buy 2 access point.
              Buy 2 antenna

              CONFIGURATION:
1st AP configure as AccesPoint with SSID for ex. HOME
2nd AP conigure as Station and connect via sitesurvey to AP "HOME"

              Installation:
1st AP connect via ethernet port to the router in home
2nd via ethernet port connect to PC in 1km away location.
Install antenna to get best results in both location.
In that configuration 1km is no problem.

AccesPoints and antenna isn't costly now.

If You decide to do it, remember to enable WEP/WPA.

the answer is yes , the neighbours signal will need to be boosted and I'm sorry to say that a standard home wireless network has a possible range of 100m so it would be impossible to boost that to 1km , it would be easyer to have your own network installed.

I've had a interest in wireless technoligy for over 20yrs
and anything like that for the home in my opinion would have to be very powerful and very expensive to set up.

I have network in city with 250 users.
I wrote it becouse i know it.
Another thing is: I'm from Poland, here costs of that small network isn't so big.
                    2.4 GHz or 5 GHz.
And next, price for acces to internet. Maybe better buy in second location?

Tigger01- Nanostation by Ubiquiti is ok, and not expensive.
In PL for a pair of nanostation You must pay about 100 euro (450 zlotych). Its good price for access to network.

A friend of mine and I used to have a wireless link using standard netgear equipment and 2 x cantennas across the River Mersey (about 2miles). This was very directional in full open space and speeds were about 20Mb max and was affected greatly by the weather. It was purley experimental but it worked by simply using better aerials...
