HOW CAN INCREASE RANGE ON ROUTER

How can I increase the range of my cable n series belkin router without having to move the router? I get a few dead spots round the house. I heard getting a better antenna can help? ive also heard i can jailbreak firmware of router and fiddle with settings to increase range? help appreciated

Hi I assume you only have 1 antennae never tried higher db antennae probably much cheaper buying 3 antennae 300mbps from fleabay. 3 antennae are better than one can be had for around ?20. Configuring router easy enough just google model no. Hope this helps much easier. I used d-link 635 router with cable modem over 3 floors no dead spots even worked out in garden no problem.

As mentioned, sticking a high gain antenna on it will help. Ebay has loads on there, but I'd be looking for over 12dbi gain.

Get some cheap netgears and use them to extend the range.

Only downside if on the extended range if using WIFI its only WEP but just hide the SSID.

I have 2 antennas on this belkin n series one but I have got a big house (4 floors which include basement and attic) hence the dead spots. Do I replace the existing antennas on my router? not sure how to do this as my one does not screw off or do these antennas plug into my router?

If its to be plugged into my router I am not sure how I am going to do this as I have no free ports on my router as all 4 full. I dont like the idea of having a usb antenna plugged into my laptop.

Ideally I'd like something plugged into my router or i'll prob need a hub now? and have no dead spots in the house

If the antennae are of the fixed design (ie, they dont unscrew) then your basically limited to either getting a new router, using the range extenders, or some 'surgical' butchery on your present router to modify it for new antennae (I wouldn't recommend this).

Four floors is a lot for any domestic router to cope with. They are mostly designed to be low power items so they dont interfere with other people so generally a standard house is about the best you can expect

An alternative to wireless may be ethernet-over-mains-power type plugs. This could possibly wire-link two or more routers together so you could have multiple distinct wireless zones within the building

i agree with most of what everyone said about the antenna and installing them on your router and range extenders. 4 floors is a lot of space to cover especially if the 4 floors have lots of walls in between. you have to place the wifi router in the central part of the building to maximize its effective range

Another option is to use some mains network plugs. But they ain't exactly cheap.

Up untill very recently had the same problem myself, 3 dead wifi spots in the extension upstairs and downstairs and conservatory, as suggested above, i used a set of orange homeplugs ?25 of the bay and a belkin router ?12 also of the bay, gave the 2nd router a static ip address rebooted everything, now have full 100% wifi.

Buy a Edimax 150N Wireless Range Extender for around ?25 ish on fleabay. Works well with my Belkin N router, except I use it as a access point rather than a range extender.

Make sure its a N range extender as I couldn't use my old G range extender with my new N router.

USe a high gain antenna or repeat the signal through another access point.

                        Good luck

I also use a Edimax 150N to extend the rage so I can sit in the garden.

But I played it smart and stayed away from ebay because like most things on ebay you can get them cheaper from online stores it you google first.

Actually I played it smart for my edimax too.

Flash it with ddwrt. you can then increase the output. Also use a high gain antenna or make an optional directional antenna. You could also use a hacked up sky dish. Loads on the net about doing this but DDWRT is your biggest gain and will also add lots of new features to your router.

BTW US record is 76 miles.

Google "cantenna" or "pringle can antenna".

Did loads of this about 5 years ago. Also broke the keys and robbed 4 other WEP router down the street I lived. Bridged all connections using Orinoco WiFi cards and began downloading torrents........at a very high download rate. This was the old fashioned BT infinity. Who needed fibreoptic?
