Router crashes

Hi, hope this in the right section. I have had to move my computer to another room and as such I am having to connect to the Internet through it's wifi connection there are also other things using this router ie Xbox iPad etc. nothing else has a problem but when I connect the pc it will cause the router (netgear through virgin) to crash after a few mins even when just general browsing this stops all other things connecting to the net while it resets. If I do not use the pc the router does not crash. The pc does not always find the wifi through its internal wifi but does if I use a dongle it does not always remember the router pass codes if I turn off the internal wifi and just use the dongle it still crashes. Any ideas as to what could cause this it never crased the router before but it was connected by cable,

1) Try and update the driver for your dongle. Get the latest driver from the manufacturer's support site.

2) Log into your router and check the logs.

Use dd-wrt firmware, it`s super if your router is compatible.

Thanks for the advice, What would I be looking in the router log? Should I try to update the router firmware as it was running ok before on this firmware?

Yes there is no harm in updating your router's FW

To see your router's log..

Type your default gateway IP in the browser's address bar

Hot!!!

All routers crash when they heat up, if your router doesn't have good ventilation it will crash. Touch the router and check if it's getting HOT. I see this all the time and when a lot of devices are demanding bandwith. I have mounted fans (like notebook coolers) under routers (with lots of air flo) to solve this problem.

Note: If this has happend a lot the router will fail.

As above, it may be overheating, some NetGear models are notorious for it (mine melted); but for it to do it in the middle of winter is a worry.

Have a good blow through any ventilation holes in case they are blocked with fluff, and try to raise it up above whatever surface it is on, or lie it on its side if it has a suitable side mount kit.
I put mine on some old Hifi spikes, which helped through the winter, but as soon as the weather turned warm it died.
(DGN2000 - well known for getting hot enough to burn your hand - having said that, my step father has the same model and his has been fine.)

Dont think it is over heating. it only crashes if the pc is on, it will crash if the pc is the only device that is on the system. If it is been used by Xbox, iPad, laptop all at the same time ( but not the pc) it does not crash.

Nothing wrong with your log............

Did you try as I mentioned earlier... Check for latest driver for your dongle from manufacturer's site and update?

If you did and problem still there.... then log into your router and disable your security option in wireless settings and test you pc with your router. Mode should be [g + b].

If your router doesnt crash then use different encryption type than what you were using...

Router Fail

Sounds like the router is about to fail. The only way to know is test with another router. I know it's easy for me to say that as I have a few sitting around (in the shop) , but maybe you know someone who will let you use one for a test.

Hi, thanks for all the help. I am away at the mo so I will try to update both router and wifi drive in comp tomorrow if this fails I will contact vm about a new router. It has been fine and not crashed once while the pc has not been on, it has been fine with lap tops, Xbox and other devices it does just not like the pc wifi!
