Extending wireless network

Hi Members Happy valentines day !

I have 2 Routers at the moment 1 down stairs connected to the modem and 1 upstairs


Downstairs TP-Link TL-WR740N 192.168.1.1

Upstairs Dlink-DIR615 rev d 192.168.1.2

Both Routers are running DD-WRT


The 2 Routers are connected with home-plugs

The problem is' nearly every day I lose internet completely.
All the lights on the down stairs router and modem stop flashing' so i have to turn off the mains to get internet again.
I'm really not sure if the configuration of the 2 routers are correct there seems to be lots of ways it can be done on the internet but cant seem to get a stable connection

Sounds like a faulty modem.

But to be sure, next time it happens, plug the modem direct to laptop and see if its kicking out a connection.

If its working then the main router is the problem.

I have the same setup.

I have my Virgin hub as modem only going in to my dreytek.

The Dreytek connects to another router which I give a static IP and acts as a switch to give me 3 more ports (wifi disabled)

I also use home plugs to connect to a wireless N router in loft.
Thsi then gives me full coverage over 3 floors.

I have got a Virgin Superhub downstairs providing wifi and wired connectivity through homeplugs. I have my old router upstairs connected with a wired homeplug and providing wifi for the upstairs. The wifi SSID and the key are the same for both routers but DHCP is disabled on the upstairs router. My daughter who was furthest away from the downstairs router has no problems with wifi so using the second has been great for extending my wifi in the house.

Few questions if you can have a look at your configuration


Should WAN CONNECTION TYPE
Be disabled or automatic configuration on the upstairs router

Also in WIRELESS/ SETTINGS ON THE UPSTAIRS ROUTER

what should wireless mode be selected to AP/CLIENT/ADHOC/REPEATER /REPEATERBRIDGE

If downstairs is connected to the modem than one upstairs should be in access point mode so the main router stays one from downstairs... In that case your access point upstairs would have different SSID than the one downstairs so you would have two wireless networks to connect, depending on where you are... That setup worked great for me in couple of occasions...

Also you can try with REPEATER /REPEATERBRIDGE option however I found that sometimes depending on the manufacturer of the router it also slows down the traffic on the network...

Also for the modem upstairs WAN connection should be DHCP with Gateway 192.168.1.1 so it connects to the router downstairs and acts as Access point for your upper floor...

Try both options and see how it works...

My upstairs router is used as a access point. So I have a different ssid.

You need to discover of its step 1 or 2 that's failing.
