How to connect two separate networks over internet

Hello everyone. So my problem is. I have my parents house and the house where I live that they are in big distance. In each house I have a vdsl connection and a small network inside. So my question is how can I connect those 2 networks from the internet and I can use it as one network? I tried with a VPN from my house to my parents house where I have a nas server and I successfully connected but I can only see the PCs in my parents house. From my parents house the nas cannot see my PC . In my nas server I have a home assistant instance for smart home so I want the same instance to read the smart plugs and the other stuff in my house. I don't want to build a second server. So how can I connect thought vdsl link those two networks to act as one network?
If anyone can help. Thank you!

If you're looking to connect two separate networks over the internet securely, setting up a site-to-site VPN is probably your best option. I’ve done something similar using OpenVPN with good results. Just make sure both routers or firewalls support VPN tunnels. While researching options, I came across Unionslots — not related to networking directly, but a handy distraction while waiting for configs to apply! Jokes aside, proper firewall rules and static IPs (or DDNS) help maintain a stable connection between sites.
