Take side off case and clean the fans it could be overheating, then try booting with side off.

If your still having problems, then there are a few things it could be.

Dodgy lithium battery a possibility - how old is the PC?

Just had similar issues with my dopey brothers PC. Got to the point where it wouldn't do anything past the post screen.

Turned out to be the hard drive.

Here's a brief list of possibilities....

          Overheating (already mentioned)
          Bios battery (already mentioned)
          Dead/failing HDD
          Bad sectors on HDD
          Corrupted system files
          Virus
          Memory module
          PSU
          CPU
          Gfx card

I have see weak power supplies do this, try disconecting the hard drive and see if it stays on longer. if the power supply is weak the additional current draw of the hard drive booting will be enough to shut down the power supply.

When the drive is booting the extra current draw could shut down a weak power supply.

So did you get it repaired? What was it?
