    Laptop power problem- Help.

I've got a power problem with my ASUS laptop in that nothing comes on , even the charge lights etc are all off.I'd been using a universal charger for a few weeks and it was working ok until one day it started smoking at the entry port.I took it out straight away and laptop was still working fine on battery power after this.I decided to then buy a new ASUS charger which came today, but when I plug it in the light on the charger comes on but the laptop is dead.Should the thing come on even if the battery is dead as long as I have the power supply plugged in,as my 1st thought was that the battery is knackered.
does anybody have any ideas what I can do next?

wrong voltage will have shorted out the connector or fuse inside on the motherboard.

the good news is it should be simple to fix,if it had a fuse then that will need replaced/resoldered.
if not then you'll probably need to resolder the connector. possibly replace the charging circuit.

The bad news is it can be a complete and absoloute bastard to break a laptop down to its motherboard without breaking things (like little plastic clips on the case and such, mainly cosmetic)

as it was working fine on battery power afterwards then it suggests that its just a connector/charge regulator issue and nothing seriously major.

Ive stripped down enough laptops now to know that its generaly less of a headache to take it to a specialist and have them do the job, that way if it all goes tits up you have some kind of warranty.
He who laughs last thinks slowest.

If your Laptop was smoking from the port it suggests motherboard or pcb damage, something may have shorted on the board and could have fried your motherboard all together. there is still power going through the board as you said it lights up but doesnt switch on. depending on the model of Asus it is you may be able to get away with replacing just the power board (if it has one mounted) if its intergrated then im affraid i you have 2 options left really..

      1. Replace the motherboard (ebay would be a start look for spares or repairs on your Asus Model). thats if your confident about replacing the board yourself

      or ..

      2. buy a new laptop im affraid.

the only trouble is .. you could take it to a specialist to look at your laptop but.. i would imagine you would have to pay for Labour and Replacement parts etc. this could be Costly! if you did have the system board repaired, there is no guarantee it wont fail again later on, given the fault you have discribed! i personally wouldnt risk it & would look on ebay for another systemboard and swap them over myself, but i would only recommend that if you are confident in doin such a task. failing that you could get the board off ebay and ask a shop how much to fit it? i think it could be cheaper than then trying to fix your old one, who knows.

Good luck anyhow what ever u decide to do.

      Regards

      Street.
