if it was wrong memory then I would expect the POST to beep and complain about it

ok, if you still use the on-board graphics, its probably down to the type of memory. or the slots you are using. memory for on-board graphics is shared with "system" memory.

the memory needs to go in the slots, closest to the graphics heat sync and CPU socket. if you are doing that, and you have remember to plug back in your cable (to the monitor) and swithch it back on (bin there done that got the red face) its down to the type of memory.

take a look at this: Documentation

plug your memory back in and see what the lights say.

they memory you should have is: 400-MHz (PC2-3200) or 533-MHz (PC2-4300) DDR2 unbuffered SDRAM non-ECC

If it proper broke, use it for something else!

Memory is sketchy at best, especaly on ASUS motherboards, i had an old A7N266 motherboard and it refused to boot with anything other than "cost me an arm, leg and firstborn" spec ram.

That was mostly down to the north bridge (Alimajik1) being complete shit, other north bridges have their issues too though, a few from via have been incompattable with a range of memories and graphics boards.
