Pc Infected - Avira installed but hasnt worked

my parents have a pc running on XP. I was using it last night - only on facebook and checking emails, not downloaded or opened any files. Avira pop up said update availabel so i click to download update. all hell then broke loose!
every 30 seconds or so, the pc beeps, avira guard pop up appears and says 23 viruses detected so i hit remove button, box says scanning gets to 100% and then disappears. another guard pop up appears saying 75 viruses and so it repeats. I can no longer get onto firefox, ccleaner wont open, avira desktop wont open internet explorer wont open. Help!! what the hell do i do?? (they will expect me to fix it - they are elderly)

Yea, you got a nasty one... THe update you installed probably wasn't Avira, but something else.

Try to boot into safemode, un-install Avira ... Go to another machine, download AVG Free & Ad-Aware, but them to CD or USB. Put into this machine, run them both.

You need to first get your Internet Explorer or Firefox working ... Once you get online, you really need to do an on-line virus scanner as well.

Another way to try to use Internet explorer: Start -> Run -> type 'explorer', change the address to a website.

Your registry is also all screwed up at the moment as well. Don't believe the pop-ups when they say you have a virus ... You probably don't. Just close the windows without clicking on anything.

I have had this happen to a few mates, came from facebook, you can get rid by booting into safe mode (f8) then system restore will work - all fixed!

For system restore - press start -click on run- box pops up with msconfig - press ok. You will see start system restore. box with system restore -press next and put in your own point at which you want to restore. It may have a restore point showing and if this point is ok with you press next or start sys. restore.
