    Orange help?

Can someone give me some advice on this little problem my mother has got with Orange?

She had a phone upgrade, but did not like the phone that was sent, so she asked for another one. Orange sent out another phone that she kept, but forgot to send back the other phone.

now 3 months have past and nothing else has been said about this spare phone, (it had been locked), so i had it and got it unlocked and used it a bit as a pay and go.

Mother had a look at her statement the other day and realized that Orange has taken out just over ?200 for the phone that she hadn't sent back. She rang them up to say she had sent it back via the post office, kept the receipt, but because its been over 6 months and hadn't heard nothing, she had thrown away the post office receipt.

Now Orange are saying that they can track down the phone to see what has happened to it??

Can they detect the phone has been unlocked and has been used as a pay and go?

Any advice will help this little problem...

What do you mean by blocked?

    1. Do you mean it was locked to Orange and you had it unlocked for use on another network?

    2. Or do you mean it was blacklisted and you had the IMEI changed?

If 1 then the phones IMEI is presented to the network each time it is used, so yes it can be spotted by the network.

If 2 apart from leaving everyone concerned liable to criminal charges, it is possible to spot a changed IMEI as it will either have to be a duplicate of an existing IMEI or a IMEI which hasn't been issued.

There was a case here recently where a guy was using a (previously stolen) Samsung D600 and it had the IMEI of a GSM telemetry device (used for remote weather stations) and such a device shouldn't be able to make calls!

If it involves changing the IMEI and fraud then it's really serious and in the UK courts you could get both wrists slapped and no pudding for two weeks!

Here you'd get 5 years absolute minimum!

This is not entirely true. The old school way was to use an IMEI from a damaged/non working phone. But changing just a few digits would usually work. But you still run the risk of having two phones with the same IMEI being used. If these are on the same network it will be picked up.
This is why the Samsung unlock that changes the IMEI to zero's no longer works. In theory you can have any number entered as the IMEI, but the network will flag this up as a non conforming IMEI.
Changing the country code at the beginning is in theory a better option.

But either way, Orange will not remove the charge from the account unless the post office accepts liability for losing the phone.

all that i done was take the phone to a shop so i could use other networks i think? like what everybody else does when a phone is locked..., but ended up using orange Sim card anyway. orange has taken out the money for the phone. So think will tell her to leave it now that the phone has now been paid for.

Blocked is not a word associated with handsets... It's either Blacklisted or Locked...

wether the phone is locked or unlocked if the imei is unchanged then yes Orange will be able to see it working.

Easiest way to see if it has been changed is to look at the sticker/label under the battery and check that against the one in the phone by pressing *#06# and if this is the case to my knowledge it can carry 2yrs free B&B in the UK
Oh and by the way if my post has been at all helpfull
please press the little THANKS tab
