    Help please - I'm a noob again

    Hi Guys,

OK so since nagra 3 hit VM Ive been outta the game. However, recently I installed Sly freesat and am now looking to hookup CS.

At the moment I have a Sly dish with a Sly freesat receiver with the sly freesat viewing card (i.e. I dont have a subscription to anything).

I have the following noob questions (I hope they dont break any rules)
    1. Which receiver should I buy? (been looking at the dreambox 800 hd but worried about 'clone' models)
    2. Once I buy it which image should I flash to it?

    Thanks in advance for helping

    Storms

P.S. I did try searching for the answers, but I'm losing the will to live after having reading so many 'similar' threads that just aren't quite the same.

    firstly m8 have a look here http://www.digital-kaos.co.uk/forums/f5/forum-rules-2/

we cannot discuss the naughty side but you can get plenty of help setting up/choosing a box. the dm800hdse clone is tried and tested and image choice is a personal thing dependent on what you want from it. if you just want to have a look whats out there you would be better off getting a cheap motorised system for about ?250 and fitting it yourself. once you see whats out there on the other satellites you will be amazed. you could of course get a slybox f3 plug it into your dish/lan and then use google to find a connection service. personally id choose a motorised dish all day long and always had a dish even when i had the vermin boxs from jarrold analogue to starview5, then arnet kryptview. regards mdt

What is your budget and do you want a twin or single tuner?
There is so much choice out there so we need to narrow it down a bit.
I'd also suggest a motorised dish, especially with the current goings on with sly uk.
As for the other things, we can't really discuss that on here.

thanks mdt, I have modified the post to tone the naughtiness down a bit

With regards to a motorised dish, unfortunately my house is positioned such that the only place i could install a motorised dish (to be able to see all satellites) is the chimney. It's a 3 storey building and heights make me queazy.... so dont wanna go down the motorized dish route. Also, too expensive to get someone else to do it.

        septicsmurf,
what goings on with sly uk?? is there something around the corner that may spoil the party?? If so it may be best to wait and see.

Basically I was looking to spend up to ?200 on a receiver and then pay something for a CS connection (just a single tuner)

clearly you missed reading this http://www.digital-kaos.co.uk/forums...d-nigh-307225/

          and this http://www.digital-kaos.co.uk/forums...-setup-301108/

I would look at a vu box, or the blade bm7000s or the tm5402 if I were you

Have a read through the thread which ramjet kindly linked, which is the reason I would advise any new starters to go the motorised route.
At least that way, if sly uk screens do go black, you'll have other options.
For your budget I'd recommend vu+ solo or vu+ uno. Gigablue 800 ue is also worth a look as are the blade 7000s and tm 5402.

              thanks ramjet and septicsmurf,
i came in to this forum with a raging e***tion in anticipation of all the new channels; now i'm as limp as a rich tea biscuit thats been dunked too many times

OK so all my plans are on hold until I can figure out a way to install a motorised dish on my chimney.

How about a multisat setup? I see you already have a sly mini dish, so you could either stick another couple of lnb's on there or swap your existing dish for a slightly larger one and motorise it. Where is your current dish located?

If you picture a set of terraced houses where the line of houses is facing from north to south you may get an idea of my problem. So each house in the terrace has one side facing east and the other facing west. So the sly dish is on the side of the house facing east and the dish is slanted so its facing approx south east. So actually the sly dish isn't mounted very high (maybe 5 metres) however from that position it's impossible for the dish to face south or sw. If it was a case of just playing around with the sly dish i think I could manage that... but my basic understanding is that you need the dish to be able to range from se to sw. Im too much of a coward to try anything where I have to get on the roof!

there isnt a great deal of choice for you on the west side anyway, most of what you need is on the southeast like 28e for sly

extra ones to consider on a multi lnb setup are 39e + 19e + 13e, with 13e + 19e being the main two as well as 28e

there is a thread by shady about such a setup http://www.digital-kaos.co.uk/forums...set-up-334542/

Go onto dishpointer and see what sats you could receive from your wall. Just enter your postcode and zoom in on your house, placing the marker on the wall you are using. It'll give you an idea of what you can get.

dependant on roof pitch even with a dish position as you state if you use T+K and scaff pole to take the dish above the eaves you will get 28.2e to 30w were all the main birds are anyway. my dish was positioned like that at one time and i got 36e to 58w. if you just want the strong birds a good quality gibby 85cm dish with darkmotor and black ultra lnb will give you thousands of fta, softcam, biss and feed channels and thats before you consider whats available via the lan connection. granted the gibby is expensive but if you were to go with a orbital or triax 80cm dish,tm2600 or darkmotor, inverto black ultra and tm5402hd with t,k pole cable clips if you shop around you could get the lot for ?250. it all depends on what you want from the system... you could also mount a 80cm motorised on your chimney if its strong and has enough brick spread to give you more arc although you would need a professional with the correct gear to do it for you. decide what your budget is and what you want and if your prepared to do it yourself and have a good look around before taking the plunge. regards mdt
