The file format is apparently important for recording onto the hard drive...the F5 can read NTFS or FAT but mine works fine on NTFS which due to the 4GB file size issues with FAT i would assume is the best format.
The laptop portable drives work fine but a full size desktop one puts less load on the F5 power supply
My ex-laptop 2.5" drive is also formatted to NTFS, but the file size limitation of FAT32 shouldn't affect any recordings as the .ts files are recorded in 1GB chunks.
