    USB hdd slowing network

I connected up a usb hdd no problems last night. Recording working perfect etc. BUT. The network connection to the box pretty much stopped. Ecm times went through the roof. I disconnected the drive and re booted and still the same.
I tried to reflash through browser, just my luck the network crashed again n kept doing it. Managed to flash through serial, but the network was still REALLY slow and didn't want to take my services and bouquets. It seems to have recovered now but I'm reluctant to reconnect the drive. Is this a common thing? Would an eSATA drive be any better? Is there anything i could do so stop the network slowing down?

    Any help would be appreciated.

EDIT: meant to say I'm using Dream-Elite Black Hole_13-OE1.6 image
