Ok, last effort (I promise!)...please bear with me...

I've just set the system back to factory settings.
    I've entered my latitude, etc.
    I selected one satellite - 16.0E Eutelsat W2
...and there is no 11.283 TP

Could this be a LNB issue? I think the dish is big enough (about a meter).

But I still get the feeling that I'm doing something wrong. Is there a simple test that I can do to see if everything is working?
I've just scanned in Thor as an experiment and get a load of channels that work fine (on fta)...

All help very much appreciated, guys

the TPs/channels you quote in your post#15 are on 19.2E NOT16E.your LNB appears to be working fine.
lets start from scratch, have you followed exactly the instructions I posted in my last post (the usals section)
heres a recap.make sure mounting pole is 100% plumb and dish is 100% central on motor spigot then point the motor/dish assembly roughly due south(I"m assuming your location is not to far off the meridian)if it is let us know. put your location latitude on the motor scale and in your STB Do not alter these again.put your location longitude in the stb(this will need fine tuning later on) check the lnb is set to zero skew.now go to the STB and go menu>installation>ok>satellite setup>press ok twice>in the dropdown menu that appears press the yellow button on all the satellites you want so that they are ticked.then exit>exit and go to motorised settings>ok scroll to 1.0W thor on line 1 drop to line2 and scroll to 11.862 H 28000(if its not there exit to advanced search and green button add TP and manually add it.return to motorised settings and put the TP in the line.
drop to the diseqc motor line and put usals in.check sat degrees read 001.0 W and the position setting line are set for your location.drop to the got to line and press "OK"and yes to settings were changed.once the motor stops move the whole motor/dish assembly L/R and the dish only up/down til you get max readings on the on the level and quality bars. then press the red scan button select the type of scan you want drop to the scan line and press ok once scan is complete it will go to full screen and hopfully you now have 1W correctly scanned in.now go back to the motorised settings menu and put another sat in the top line say 16E then drop staight down to the "go to" line > and yes to the settings have been changed wait for motor to stop and red button scan.DO NOT press exit before scanning.as you will revert to the previous sat.repeat this for all the sats you want scanned in.you will succeed mate and we will talk you through fine tuning once you have got this far.

11.283 H the TP he is after has some FTA channels on it so he should be able to set up with them ok,his problem is his setup is not right yet but hopefully we will get there in the end

              Wow, many thanks.
Re moving the motor/dish to achieve optimum levels...what levels should I be looking for?
On the initial Thor set up, whilst moving the dish up/down (and me running up and down a ladder a million times!) the best I can get is Level 90%/Quality 55% - should I be looking for higher percentages?
The Thor scan after that is fine, and I end up with numerous tp's and, for example, BBC World on fta.
When I set up and try to scan for 16.0E, my percentage readings are 90%/30%
I haven't yet tried to wiggle the motor l/r during the Thor set up to improve the level/quality readings...but that might be a Sunday job!!
Btw, I dug an old Humax out of the loft and it couldn't find 16.0E either, so dish alignment looks the more likely problem(?)
              Cheers again

yes your dish alignment is still out.accuracy in set up is all.
we dont know your dish size or location but I"m near Hull and on a 1mt dish get a quality of of 85% on BBC world with a TM6800 your quality of 55% seems very low for such a strong channel.and further alignment is needed but at least we are getting somewhere now.16E readings will be lower but that quality level you quote is not enough yet.I put a car exhaust clamp on the mounting pole under the motor to stop it sliding down during set up.so send your dish to 1W again and slacken the motor just enough to move then turn it slowly L/R til you get the max signal possible tighten the nuts both sides equally and recheck your signal level if its dropped try again.then do the elevation on the dish again getting the max quality possible.now if your dish is square on the motor spigot and your mounting pole 100% plumb you will track the arc ok.so once your happy with the setup on 1W send the dish to 16E.and scan.on 11.283 V 27500 I get 66% quality on this TP a stronger one is 12736 V 3703 sic international is a FTA channel on this TP and I get 84% for that.
I confess I only mount my dishes where I can reach them from a step ladder as it makes it a lot easier. If you can get a portable TV where you can see it it helps a lot if you have no meter.

Many many thanks for this. I've had a tweak of the motor and things are looking much healthier - up to 75% on the initial Thor scan.
Still poor on 16e, though 30% - so I've decided to move the dish to a more elevated position and start from scratch.
I appreciate all of your help and patience with this - if your ever in London I promise to buy you a beer (don't worry, Im not in the bit that's on fire...!)
I'll let you know how I get on when l move the dish.
                  Cheers again

glad your making progress but if your line of sight is ok raising the dish wont help plus it makes it all the difficult to work on.if there are no obstacles in the way the lower the dish the easier it is.anyway let us know if you get 16E ok in the end as it should be no problem where you are.
PS I was born in edmonton no trouble in enfield area then, mind you it was 1942

Having a similar problem setting up a TM5402 with motorised dish on 16E - will let you know how I get on if it's any use
