Mine has worked with everything I've thrown at it including a micro sd in usb adaptor. But I would say to stick with a desktop version as they have there own power supply as opposed to a 2.5" portable usb powered one. No point in stressing the psu if you don't have to
I think the main reason to use a powered external caddy hard drive is so the PSU is not overloaded through the USB, I believe that even technomate only suggest a 2.5" external usb powered drive anything in the 3.5" range needs external power.
