    Technomate-1000 CI Faulty ???

My 1st venture into the mystery world of sats , is to buy a used technomate TM-1000 CI off ebay for ?20 , and link it to my old sky dish .
I've read many posts that say this set up is crap , but i think i've fallen , even before this hurdle and need a bit of help .
Without an LNB input connected , the reciever shows "no signal", but allows me to access all the recievers features
, as does my old sky box.
The minute i plug in an LNB connection , it powers down and refuses to power back up until i remove the LNB input , my old sky box doesn't do this .
Can anyone tell me if the recievers "~~~~ed" , or is it just my incompetence , it didn't come with a manual .
    I'd appreciate any help .

Sounds like it's the f connector not connected correct. Make sure f connectors are correctl at lnb and receievr end.

Thanks for that Mate , you were spot on ! , the outer braid had cut through on one connector.
All's i need to do now is see if i can find a sat signal on it ! . As i've said , i've only the basic kit and even less idea , but we all need to start somewhere.
I've put up a 2.5 mtr mast on the back of my bungalow , to try and clear trees , in a small woods.
All's i've done so far is twiddle the mast around , in the general direction of everyone's sky dishes , but can't get more than 7% signal quality , although signal strength shows around 80% ? Thanks for your help again .

It's probably the elevation. If you want to open films/footy etc aim at tone west. Set up on BBC world and once thats tuned in it should pick up other channels. Make sure you ahve latest patch and softcam loaded.

Thank you again , i lowered the elevation as you advised , jiggled the mast about and now have 70% quality .
I then scanned in many channels , but can only view CT1 on hotbird , the rest are scambled .
I then attempted to download the latest patch to the reciever , which hadn't been done since 2005 , which was a success , but when i attempted the TM softcam (dated Nov 09)
, i found it a struggle for the loader to recognize it and when a download is tried " invalid firmware file " displays .
          I'd appreciate any advice.
          Thanks again !
