ps3 powering up then going to standby

thinking of buying a ps3 of ebay it says it powers up then goes str8 to standby isnt sold with hard drive cause this be the case why it goes to standby...

hi my dm800hd is dead first he freez put the power plug off then put it on nothing happen the box is dead is orginal box not clone any idea please help...
