How can I recover information from a back up

I made a windows back up of my laptop, I have now lost registration details of some software I had on my laptop (VAGCOM Volks Wagon diagnostics) is there any way I can get the registration details from the back up????
Simpe instructions would be great as I am a bit thick.

how did you make the backup? what software did you use? if you made a image of your computer you can actually explore the image if its mounted onto your system. ill do my best to explain what i mean once i get alittle more information from you, so you can be best advised.
