    Default Ford Focus error message.

    Hi.
I was wondering if any Ford techs could shed some light on a problem I have been asked to look at by my daughter.

I, myself, drive an Astra G and am not really familiar with the Ford Focus.

The car in question is a 2005 Focus with 1.8 duratech diesel engine (1.8 TDCi).

The problem: The car displays a message on the information display "Engine System Failure" usually occurs when accelerating between 40 - 60 mph.

The Engine check light is not illuminated either at the time of error display or after.

The car did suffer with a overheating error which was attributed to a kinked water pipe between the expansion tank and the bottom hose which was restricting flow. The pipe was replaced and the overheating warning has not reoccured.

Internet searches have not revealed anything which is conclusive so I am looking for suggestions.

Unfortunately I do not have access to a Ford scanner but would presume, since the fault light is not on, that no "present" faults are logged.

    Cheers
    Graham

    Todays experiment

Take it down the bypass and SLOWLY over a few miles build up speed
    see if fault occurs.

    GUESS it's

    a) VNT turbo shitted up (don't think so)
    b) The electric turbo actuator has seized, so it's overboosting
(design feature) there are common and only cost a reasonable 1500 quid + vat from Fords complete with new turbo

    Try looking for

    a) Essex Turbos
    b) Meat-City Turbos
    c) Midlands Turbos

Who might be able to supply the ELECTRIC wastegae cheaper
    OR

The fault is none of above

    Hi

Your best bit would be to get the Car Diagnose and see what fault codes stored.

Is the Glow Plug light NOT Flashing when you get "Engine System Failure"

    @ Meat-Head
thanks for your suggestion I do think that the Turbo is not at it's best as there seems to be quite a bit of oil in the intercooler pipes. I will try your suggestion and see if the problem occurs.

    @ Ashraf6119,

Yes I suppose it would be a good idea to get the vehicle scanned but as I said previously wouldn't the Engine check light be on if a code was registered?

Don't know about the Glow plug light I will have to ask, The car is not with me.

I think the general fault Red light fashes when the message is displayed but again will have to ask.

This has been a 'long running concern' ! If you wish to 'treat it' yourself, I suggest you disconnect and reconnect the accelerator pedal, and a multiplug 'behind' the glovebox, with the key off ( of course ), and see if it 'goes away'!
'By the way', it is a Duratorq - the diesel. Duratec is a name for some/most of the recent petrol engines!

Thganks for the suggestions and yes you are quite right it is a "Duratorq"

By "long running concern" do you mean Ford are aware of this and have issued a TSB?

AFAIK there is no bulletin, and no 'answer' yet.
