If it is a really dim image, you are having a backlight problem. This tends to be a small board located on the bottom of most Lcds called the inverter board. There shoul be two silcone wires coming out of a plug on it. Sometimes these plugs are keyed so that you can put them in upside down, but when you do they do not make contact. There is also a harness that goes from the motherboard to the inverter - make sure there are no bent pins. Lastly, there should be a small switch that detects that the screen is closed. On some laptops, when this pin is depresses it turns off the backlight.

or the backlight inverter itself could well be dicked, its not unusual. On it there will be a part number, whack that number into google and you should be able to find a replacement backlight inverter.
