Default Customs Limit going up in 1 week

If you wanted to order anything overseas over the price of about ?18 or 22 euro, you could have been stung for import tax ? a hefty fine, proportional to the item?s cost, that you have to pay to the post office

Always a bone of contention and a royal pain in the arse for any European importer , a new EU law will be bought in on December 1st, 2008 that raises the ridiculous cap from a meager ?22 to a massive ?150.

This is very good news indeed.

That is great news, but some companies charge handling fees of such, like UPS, what will happen to these? Last time i ordered something at 15KG with customs value of 50pounds, i was charged 40pounds total and it was made up of a number of charges.

There will still be a handling charge if you go above the threshold of 150 Euros. The weight of the parcel has no bearing at all, that will just be reflected in the actual postage charge made by the exporter from outside of the EU.

I have done a bit more reading on this matter and it seems that the law is a bit misleading.
Customs duty is currently payable on goods bought online from non-EU countries worth ?18 or more. But from 1 December, the new ?105 limit will apply. VAT will still be charged on goods over ?18, and is not affected by the changes.
So I guess the limit only applies to the duty which is alot less than the Vat %.
Sorry for getting peoples hopes up but the law is a bit misleading.
