Default Wrong or faulty map ?

First it was transponders that came along after the "cant find anything electronically wrong with this ecu " senario , now it looks like its the remapping errors that are contributing to the "what the %*@#k^ is wrong with this ecu ?"
I often read about chechsums . When I read or load from my eprom programmer I get a "checksum" displayed .Is it the same checksum ,can i use this checksum to verify the integrity of the " maps " ? Is this a new tool to check the ecu ? Do (please) tell regards
