It could be anything Mate, check the basics 1st and then work from there
we put new air flow meter on and thottel body still no joy
did you say 1988, so thats a MK2 ?
has this vehicle got mechanical fuel injectors, like the k-jetronic system. have a look at your fuel pressure. could be low. what is your engine number.
Check the timing beld, and if the crankshaft key is still in place.
you right, did'nt read complained properly.
Hello,
According to his post this car is 1.6 Petrol so, there is NO question of (mechanical fuel injectors, like the k-jetronic system).
paul1960,
When was the Fuel filter and S/Plugs been last changed on this ?
Also is the Throttle Body clean and basic Settings been done for Throttle Body.

Thanks Ash
Oh yes if my post was helpful than Please don't forget to press the Magic word Thanks
sorry its a 1998 model mk4
Just for the record: the K-Jetronic system is for petrol cars and was very common in 1988. Since 7:38pm today we now know it's not a 1988 model but a 1998. The guy changed his post. Check his other post where the model year is still 1988.
had a similar effect a few years ago with akl engine 1.6 sr, very sluggish at low rpm, catalytic converter were block. not sure about the high idling, maybe air leak in intake system.
make sense why i could not find 1.6 sr engine 1988 on elsawin. has the ecu been scan for any faults yet. (paul1960)
paul 1960 Good afternoon
here in Brazil runs a golf 1.6 petrol injection Simos, good is on this basis that I will comment, check probe and air mass, preferably unique, these are probably your fault sensors
