Transit rough idling

I have 2007 Ford Transit 85 T280s diesel and the problem i have when idling the engines revs are erratic they constantly fluctuate up and down between 600 & 800.The van drives fine apart from the idling,have read somewhere it may need PCM update,is this correct and can i buy the equipment to do this myself

There are PCM updates for that from Ford.
Also it's worth checking error memory in PCM. EGR might be doing funny things.
