So what cable is the program uploaded to be used with then?

the last cable called vcds912, i have the same your cable 908 and the soft 912 but i work whit the program vcds908 only, because work very well now,and i dont want a bad surprise whit other software

908.0 912 and 10.6 uses FW 1.81...normally can be used for all vcds interfaces... 10.6 not tested...but 908.0 and 912 no problem to use on 9xx interfaces...

For 5xx 6xx 7xx 8xx not suitable if FW still old one...
