Default BMW e46 Variable valve timing PROBLEM

    Hi all,

I have BMW E46 04 year.Engine is 1.8i (2.0) petrol. Customer said that noise come up like click and its here
Diagnostic shows no fault. but noise is terrible. when touch accelerator pedal noise gets louder. Its a petrol car but works as diesel.

I tried to change Variable valve timing actuator motor 250eur, no luck.

Checked timing is OK. (checked three times)

Only one good think that when I turn camshaft adjuster (in the picture) a bit to front clockwise noise is going lower, but engine MIL lite is on and fault saying that camshaft sensor fault.

The question is what to do, how to find fault without spending unnecessary Eur ?

I search around and found something, but engine is different:

Vanos units are a bloody disaster of an idea. Just done an E36 325i where the Vanos unit jammed and allowed the exhaust valves to touch the pistons (YES it can happen on these engines) timing was perfect ie no jumped teeth on either of the chains, Just a small "cough" and a rattle (according to the customer) and it had sh*t itself! posted by muttsnuts2370

Any good ideas would be great. Thanks.

These N42 engines can suffer with valvetrain noise and can be sensitive to wrong oil grades. Check the camshafts for wear and check the oil supply from spray bar. If OK and is all timed up correctly look at the VVT unit. Also look at the crankcase breather/PCV valve may be blocked. Hope this helps, good luck.

The length of the tensor is not correct

    Well, sorted.

Changed timing chain set and adjustment units 4,5 in the picture. Worked.

    Thanks for all.

Good source to check parts and optional prices.
