VW CAN Messages???

Hey everyone, new here. I recently bought a 2010 VW GTI and love this car. A while back for one of my college classes I designed a piece of software that would replace your instrument cluster with a computer screen. The software would use data coming over the OBD port and display it on the screen. Does anyone know if I tap directly into the can-bus on my car could i get more data that is not possible to get through OBD. Does anyone know of the format of the CAN messages running on the bus. Would a piece of software like VAG-COM help me decode these messages so that I can include them into my software?

Great find. That defiantly gives me a starting point.

How does VAG-COM get around the can gateway on the OBD port. I thought the gateway would only let OBD packets through and block everything else. VAG-COM seems to be able to get vehicle metrics or are they just metrics coming over OBD?
